TV replay catches Lawrence on the offside
(The Sangai Express) 03 November 2002, 09:00 IST

Large scale violence broke out during the second semi-final of Santosh Trophy football championship between hosts Manipur and Goa here today following a controversial goal by the visitors forcing abandonment of the match which the Goan team has refused to replay tomorrow.

"There is no question of playing tomorrow as we were leading 1-0 while the match was abandoned," Goan coach Nobert Gonsalves told PTI here shortly after the organizers decided to play the match again.

Gonsalves said his team would take to the field only if the Goan Football Association gives directions in this regard. "As per the rules if a match is abandoned due to lack of order it has to be fully replayed," the AIFF President Priyaranjan Dasmunshi told PTI over phone from New Delhi.

The matter, he said, was reported to him by the AIFF Disciplinary Committee Chairman, Hardey Jadeja, who was instructed to go according to the rules. "Jadeja will take a final decision in this matter after holding a meeting with the local organizers," he said.

Dasmunshi clarified that in case of an abandonment due to natural calamity only the remaining portion of the match is replayed, but in case of "lack of order" it has to be fully replayed.

Speaking from Goa the AIFF Secretary Alberto Colaco also said that according to rules only the organizing committee could take a decision in this regard. He said that he was told about the development by Jadeja, but it would not be fair for him to comment as his team (Goa) was involved.

The trouble broke out 12 minutes into the second half when substitute Climax Lawrence scored off a lob pass from Covan Lawrence to give Goa 1-0 lead.

Television replay showed that Climax was off-side but referee S M Balu and assistant referee Biswajit Bera did not relent.

After about 45 minutes stoppage, the match resumed when the players appealed to the restive local crowd to maintain calm. But the game came to a halt again only after a minute as the crowd again indulged in violence.

After a marathon meeting later in the evening, Hardev Jadeja, chairman of AIFF's disciplinary committee, announced that the match will be replayed "in the larger interest of the game."

Jadeja said spectators would be banned from carrying bottles into the stadium tomorrow and 700 securitymen would 'guard "the 15 entrances to the stadium. Jadeja said a written assurance has also been received from the Manipur police that such a situation would not recur tomorrow.

When asked whether the Goa team would agree to replay the match as they were leading 1-0, Jadeja said the decision has been taken and the team would be immediately informed. The organizers made a frantic appeal to the crowd, who were hurling bottles, to maintain peace even as the press photographers and players were seen running for safety.

Earlier, the match saw both the teams playing cautiously putting more emphasis on defence rather than attacking on the opposition's post which resulted in couple of missed chances.

Goa's captain Denis Cabral attempted some good shots at the Manipur goal but an alert custodian Noren Singh thwarted the moves.

The famed Manipuri forwards consisting of Bijen Singh, Bungo Singh and Tiken Singh combined well to make forays into the tight Goan citadel but their attack fizzled out due to some poor finishing.

Goa was unlucky to score a goal in the 49th minute when Menino Fernandes, taking advantage of a faulty clearance by a Manipuri defender, unleashed a powerful drive which hit the upright. In the very next minute, Cabral got a through pass but faltered near the goalmouth and shot wide.

This was Manipur's maiden appearance in the semifinals of the Santosh Trophy.
