Host Manipur University won its maiden title in the All India Inter University Hockey (women) Tournament with a 4-1 thrashing of Guru Nanak Dev University at MU ground today.
the MU eves overcame first half resistance from the rival university with a brace by Y chandrajini (35th, 52nd) and one apiece from H Indubala (23rd PC) and L Anita (44th PC) ensuring the comfortable win in its debut year at the competition.
Baljit (Sr) scored the GND consolation goal in the 29th minute to finish as the runners-up varsity of the tournament which was decided at the end of the super league matches played today.
The hosts University culled nine maximum points from three matches in the super league round to debut in the competition on an auspicious note.
In the other game, Punjabi University, Patiala whipped last edition�s champion - Ranchi University - 5-1 with Parkash sounding the Ranchi board thrice as Rajwinder Kaur and Suman contributed one each.
The losers narrowed the goal deficit through Arti Baraik and sank at the bottom of the four team super league.
The competition among Indian universities had begun in 1955 with University of Bombay winning it.
