Dimapur, November 24:
Concerned over the spurt in the number of unauthorized unions and organizations collecting taxes from transporters, the Dimapur district administration has recently launched a drive against these illegal tax collectors.
The Dimapur police so far arrested more than thirty persons who were involved in illegal tax collection, especially at Lahorijan area along Assam-Nagaland border.
According to a source, a vehicle traveling into Nagaland from Assam is required to pay an amount of about Rs.2,500 as taxes to various unions, authorized and unauthorized.
In some cases, the amount of tax paid is over Rs.5,000. In the wake of the rise in number of such unions and increase in tax amount, some transporters unions in a joint memorandum to Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, appealed to the district administration to take immediate measures for redressal of their grievances.
Following this and the open outburst of the citizens, the administration recently launched the drive against the illegal unions and organizations to mitigate the sufferings of all concerned.
The citizens pointed out that whopping price rise of commodities was mainly owing to taxes collected from the business community.
The Dimapur police said they would continue the drive in the next few months.
