Imphal, June 29 2010:
Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has asked the State authorities to keep a strict vigil on use of carbide gas in ripening of fruits.
Use of carbide gas for ripening of fruits is prohibited under Rule 44 AA of Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules 1955, said a PIB press release quoting a circular issued by the Ministry.
It said circumstantial evidence of presence of calcium carbide in godowns/wooden crates/ premises kept together with fruits may be used as evidence in the Courts.
