Imphal, July 07 2011:
Swarms of locusts have reportedly attacked and destroyed crops in the paddy field of Khunthak village, located about 70 kms from Imphal and under Kasom Khullen sub-division of Ukhrul district.
According to a statement issued by the village headman N Ramhenrhing, Khunthak is traditionally an agricultural village with Jhumming as the mode of cultivation being practised.
However, this year, the jhumming site (Lojat), located about 12 kms from the village after crossing two rivers, namely Taret Lok and Hangoi Lok have been attacked by swarms of locusts just as the paddy started sprouting leaving the field barren. The village headman has drawn the attention of the Government and other authorities concerned for taking up necessary relief measures to bail out the affected villagers.
