Imphal, March 16 2009:
Large number of trees were destroyed by a fire that broke out on February 26 last at the plantation area of Mantak village of Chandel district.
The trees were grown by Mantak Joint Forest Management Committee under aegis of DFO Thoubal under an agreement signed with FRO Kakching.
Trees worth Rs 15,00000 were destroyed by the said fire.
Mantak Village Authority in a press release alleged one Aheibam Bijoy of Porompat Thawanthaba Leikai for burning down the said trees.
An FIR had been filed at Kakching Police Station, the release added.
Informing that similar fires also broke out on March 8 and 9, the VA further urged the concerned not to destroy the trees for personal gains.
