Imphal, February 25 2009:
Lamenting the implementation of NREGS which guaranteed 100 days of jobs in a year to the rural poor has become a mockery in the four Gram Panchayats of Santolabari, Kalapahar, Toribari and Koubruleikha, Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union (MGWU) has informed that till date only 10 days wages have been provided to the job card holders living in these four Gram Panchayats for the year 2007-08.Thus, the prospect of receiving the wages for the remaining 90 days has become only a dream as the financial year is ending in March.
In a statement jointly signed by the general secretary of MGWU Kharga Tamang and Pradhan of Kalapahar Gram Panchayat Ribu Raj Bhujen, the Union pointed out the the wages should be paid to the job card holders within 15 days of the works being approved.
Reacting to the contention of the District progamme Officer that the Panchayat has no required quarum to implement the scheme, the Union has questioned why the work programme forwarded by the fractured Panchayat body had been approved by the Govt in th fist place.
