Governor Gurbachan Jagat presented Manipur State Kala Akademi Fellows and Awards to 16 State artists in an award presentation ceremony held at JN Manipur Dance Academy today.
The Governor handed over Fellows to two artists and Awards to 14 artists in the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Gurbachan Jagat stressed on the need to expand the support of the State Kala Akademi to artists in a more liberal way to provide livelihood not only to practising artists but also to those who have retired due to old age.
He further said that the effort of the Akademi to recognise merit in rare art forms like pena, tribal culture, wariliba, khongjom parba, goura leela etc have undoubtedly sustained these rare art forms in the State.
Gurbachan Jagat also called for bringing peace in the State through art and culture.
The Governor said, "Art and culture besides providing entertainment and relaxation to the viewers create awareness among the masses on different issues confronting the society".
Maintaining that Manipur is passing through a difficult phase, affected by violence, conflict and social tension, the Governor said that art and culture can be a powerful medium to bring about a change in the State.
Gurbachan Jagat said, "During my short stay for about seven months, I have realised the rich tradition of art and culture in Manipur.
And I am proud to have
the privilege of associating myself with this rich heritage".
