Joining the International community in observing World AIDS Day, a marathon race was organised in Ukhrul district yesterday spreading the message of 'Universal access and human rights' .
Organised by the district administration in collaboration with Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MACS) and other Ukhrul-based NGOs working in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention/intervention, the marathon kick-started at 7.30 am from TNL ground and was participated hundreds of people from all walks of life.
The competition section of the marathon was divided into three categories, men's, women's and junior boys', each carrying a cash prize of Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 respectively for the first, second and third winner.
From TNL ground, the race passed through Dungrei Junction and GREF road, which is distance of 10 kms.
From there, the competitors returned to the starting point, which is also the finishing line.
Encouragingly, Additional Commissioner of Ukhrul Armstrong Pamei also participated in the race, covering the first 10 kms in 35 minutes.
He secured 13th position in the overall ranking at the end of the race.
A large number of people have also came out to encourage the participants all along the route of the race.
In the afternoon, the formal observance function was held in Ukhrul town hall.
Speaking as one of the resource persons during the function, president of Indigenous Women Association (IMA) said that people living in interior parts of the district know very little about HIV/AIDS.
