Along with a call for formulating a special policy and chart out an action plan for the development of tourism in Manipur, World Tourism Day was observed today.
'Tourism and bio-diversity' was the theme of the observance held under the aegis of Department of Tourism, Govt of Manipur at Hotel Imphal here.
Speaking as chief guest of the occasion, Prof N Mohendro pointed out that for the development of tourism in Manipur, first and foremost, a State policy is required and it needs to be implemented into an action plan.
He said that Manipur has enough potential to develop tourism and in order to tap these potential necessary infrastructures should be developed.

Quoting an example, Prof Mohendro noted that when tourists visited Loktak or any other tourist spots in Manipur, the first thing they would want to know is where the toilet is.
Unfortunately, there is no toilet in any of the tourist spots of Manipur.
This is one area that needs to be given immediate attention.
Along with this, there is the need for development of necessary infrastructures like road, hotels, etc.
It is also imperative to ensure security of the visiting tourists and respect them, he added.
Quoting a report published by the State Tourism Department which says that 1,15,360 domestic tourists visited Manipur in 2008-2009, Prof Mohendro pointed out that this figure shows that adequate number of tourists are coming to Manipur every year.
In his presidential address, Commissioner of Tourism KK Chhetry said State Government alone cannot ensure development of tourism without the support and co-operation of every individuals in society.
He observed that tourism sector is being recognised the world over as the only sector which can generate highest number of employment and tourism also help in restoration of peace.
But on the contrary, development of tourism sector in Manipur is still at the bottom and the tourism potential in Manipur has not been able to tap properly.
So, the Government of Manipur would be making every possible efforts for the development of tourism and the public should co-operate in this regard, he appealed.
Selection Grade Lecturer of Manipur College L Somorjit, who was guest of honour of the function, also spoke at the occasion.
As part of the observance, essay writing competition and photograph contest were also organised.
Prizes and certificates were also given away to the winners of the essay writing competition as well as to all the participants of photograph contest.
