Imphal, May 22 2009:
Plasters of the ceiling of a newly constructed building of Anthropology Department, Manipur University caved in today.
Some portions of the ceiling on the first floor of the building were found broken today.
Due to leakage, hard-board ceiling of the building's second floor has also been detached.
Conference hall and ladies toilet are also in bad shape, some students told newspersons who went there.
MU engineers have inspected the broken down sections and other parts requiring attention.
Meanwhile, DESAM has asserted that the Manipur University Engineering Cell should be held responsible for the sudden break-down of some portions of the newly constructed building.
Speaking to media persons at their office today, DESAM education secretary A Thoi-Thoi said that the break-down in some portions of the building which was inaugurated on December 10 last year was a result of the failure of MU engineers to monitor the construction work with due concern.
Saying that they have also visited the building, Thoi-Thoi noted that there were several signs of non-maintenance of quality in the construction work.
Improper levelling on the ground floor, fissures in ceilings and leaking tin-roofs on the top floor were some of the flaws observed in the building.
DESAM demanded that the broken down portion of the building should be repaired with due emphasis on quality within a month.
It also appealed to all concerned not to impose any percentage deduction against infrastructure development work of educational institutions.
