Imphal, July 17 2010:
Acivir is not used in the treatment of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and in no way related with the disease.
Instead acivir is used in the treatment of Herpes.
An official of State Malaria Department said there is so far not a single medicine invented for treatment of JE.
The disease is caused by combination of different microorganisms.
Acivir is a medicine used in treatment of herpes and not JE.
The official further said the best way for treatment of JE is vaccination.
Vaccination should be done during winter.
It cannot be done when the disease is spreading widely.
The present mode of treating a patient infected with JE or suspected to be a case of JE is by giving supportive treatment.
The official added that some doctors even began to question whether acivir is now used to treat JE.
If the symptoms of JE arise in an individual, it would be better to consult doctor or visit hospital.
For prevention of JE, breeding grounds of mosquito should be destroyed, used bed nets during night and wear long sleeve dresses.
