Imphal, October 16 2008:
Students and teacher of Bunglon High School in Churachandpur district today observed Dr Kalam Day commemorating the visit of former President of Indian to their school on this day in 2006 .
Located in the remote village of Bunglon in Churachandpur district, the school has gained the unique distinction of being the first school in this strife-torn State that have been visited by a President of
the Country.
Apart from sanctioning 10 sets of computer, Kalam has also given inspirational talks to the students of the school during his visit at the invitation of its principal Gin Gangte, an awardee of Jewel of India.
The 4-km long road leading to the school had been lying in bad shape for many years.
But it was developed and black-topped ahead of the high profile visit.
Appreciative of the unexpected development, the villagers have named the road as Dr Kalam Road.
Speaking at the occasion of Dr Kalam Day observance today, Gin Gangte said that October 16 is a memorable day not only for the staff and students of Bunglon High School but also of the whole village.
The computer sets donated by Dr Kalam have given a boost to the students in pursuing their computer education, Gin Gangte said, adding that the children who have now become computer savvy will always be thankful to Kalam and consider him as the torch bearer of their computer education.
''I will soon write a letter to him (Kalam) describing the joyous mood of our students, other children and elders of the village'', Gin Gangte informed.
As part of the commemorative event, villagers also joined the staff and students of the school in planting trees along the Dr Kalam Road today.
In the evening, the villagers witnessed video clipping of Kalam's historic visit.
