Imphal, March 14:
Reacting to the loss of eye sights of five persons after they underwent cataract operations during an eye camp organised by the District Blindness Control Society (DBCS) at Bishnupur, the DC of Bishnupur district Aleng AS Shimray, who is also the chairman of the DBCS, has asked the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to submit a comprehensive report on the tragic incident at the earliest possible time.
"As the Chairman of the society I have asked the Chief Medical Officer Dr Gulapi to submit a comprehensive report on the matter at the earliest so that necessary actions can be initiated," Shimray said today.
Stating he has not received any written complaint on the matter from the patients' party, he clarified that he was acting based on media reports.
"After receiving the report I will consult the matter with health authorities to take up necessary actions", Shimray informed.
Dejected and furious family members of the five patients, all belonging to Bishnupur district have already demanded adequate compensation from the State Government and to initiate befitting actions against the erring doctors for their reprehensible irresponsibility.
The fateful eye camp that brought doom to the five patients instead of improving their eye sight was held on February 23 at the Bishnupur district hospital.
The five victims who have been rendered almost blind after the cataract operations are Huidrom Kullachandra (80), Th Ibecha (47), P Achoubi (85), M Leirik (68) and W Manao (85).
The family members said that Thoudam Ibecha and Moirangthem Leirik have lost their eye sight completely while Pebam Achoubi and Wahengbam Manao who were operated on the right eyes are losing the sight of their left eyes following infection.
Even as written complaints pointing out the misfortune of the patients have been forwarded to the DC Bishnupur and CMO Dr Gulapi, there has been no response till date, lamented the aggrieved family members.
They warned of taking recourse to strong agitation with the support of civil society organisations if the authority concerned fail to take up remedial measures immediately.
