Imphal, October 24 2010:
Drawing the attention of the Government for public consultation at the time of naming the three women markets of Khwairamband Bazar, Federation of Regional and Indigenous Society (FREINDS) has suggested that the word 'Ima' should be included at the time of considering any new names.
Addressing a press conference in this connection at its office today, FREINDS advisor H Kulla said Khwairamband Ima Keithel is already well known at the National as well as International level and the word 'Ima' which connotes respect should not be deleted at the time of considering any new name.
He pointed out that in the new names i.e.Khwai Nupi Keithel, Anouba Nupi Keithel and Kha-Nupi Keithel, that the Government has proposed for the three newly constructed markets, the denotation of the word 'Nupi' is confusing.
So, names which are suitable to the land and its people should be chosen.
Suggesting that Lakshmi Keithel, New Market and Purana Bazar would be renamed respectively as Imoinu Keithel, Linthoingambi Keithel and Khwairamband Ima Keithel, Kulla explained that Imoinu is the Goddess of wealth for the Manipuri people and Queen Linthoingambi fought battle and protected Sana Konung in the absence of the King.
He also suggested that the Tribal Market being constructed at Lambulane could be named after freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu.
Furthermore, Kulla pointed out that statue of King Bheigyachandra taming an elephant, presently at Khairamband Bazar is in a deplorable condition and it should be repaired and developed to attract attention of the people.
FREINDS secretary Joy Chingakham stated that the Govt should reconsider its decision without waiting for public agitation.
Recalling earlier instances in which the Government renamed some historic places in the face of public protest, Joy lamented that the Government is yet to give its response to the suggestion for naming the Sahid Minar as Athoubashingee Ningshing Yumbi.
