Imphal, February 17 2011:
Manipur University has been struck off from the list of institutes accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) as assessment of the University has not been carried out although NAAC has already graded it B Plus.
NAAC is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country.
According to a highly placed source, like other institutions of higher education in the country, NAAC had graded Manipur University as B Plus in 2005 while Prof Ng Bijoy and Dr RK Ranjan were respectively the Vice Chancellor and Registrar.
The grading given by NAAC is valid for a period of five years and it is on the basis of this grade that the fund to be granted by the Central Government is finalised.
The grading of NAAC is also a matter of pride for the students.
After Prof C Amuba became the Vice Chancellor of Manipur University, an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) headed by Prof Mani as director was set up to assist NAAC in assessing the University for re-accreditation.
However, as the said IQAC failed to submit its report in time, Manipur University has been struck off from the list of NAAC accredited institutes.
As a result, the University is notr on the list of graded of the NAAC, the source said.
The source further informed that there are at present seven NAAC accredited colleges which are affiliated to Manipur University.
These colleges are DM College of Arts (Imphal), DM College of Science (Imphal), GP Women's College (Imphal), Manipur College (Chingamakha, Imphal), RK Sanatombi Devi College of Education (Imphal), United College (Lambung, Chandel) and Don Bosco College (Maram, Senapati).
