With a total of 141 incidents recorded last year, the violence against women in Manipur is on the raise, according to reports from the Foundation for Social Development Organization, an NGO working in the field of violence against women.
The report of the NGO while observing increase in the incidents of violence against women in the state stated the mode of violence towards women as look down upon the women using unpleasant words, killing, assaulting, raping, giving mental and physical harassment and trafficking etc.
As per analysis report of the FSDO in the year 2005, a total of 117 cases of violence against women occurred, it was 102 in the next year 2006 while 100 in 2007 but in the year 2008, it was recorded at 141.The report was compiled based on the media report.
Many incidents of such kinds unreported to the media also occurred.
The analysis report observed that women are harassing right from their home to the society.
Taking advantage of weakness of the women, they are discriminating.
There was no change in the trend of gender discrimination.
In the conflict situation of the state, both state and non-state actors are harassing the women.
The trend of burning women and molesting them in dowry related matter also on the raise in Manipur, the NGO stated.
Many incident of violating women are covered up without reporting and due to the prevailing circumstances of her surrounding.
Some instant are due to not aware of rights of women by the women.
The NGO suggested the need of civil societies, public and NGOs working in the field to check violence against women.
