Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) authorities have expressed willingness to include martial art forms, Thang-Ta of Manipur and Kalarippayattu of Malabar, in the curriculum of IGNOU.
A two-day workshop held at Calicut, Kerala recommended that Thang-Ta and Kalarippayattu be included in the curriculum of IGNOU.
The workshop titled 'Malabar Meets Manipur' was jointly organised by IGNOU Regional Centre, Cochin and IGNOU Institute for Vocational Education and Training, Shillong at SK Pottekad Cultural Centre, Calicut on November 6-7 .
The workshop was inaugurated by former DGP of Kerala and Governor of Meghalaya RS Mooshahary as chief guest.

In his address, Mooshahary dealt on the rich cultural heritage and advanced martial art forms of Manipur and Malabar.
In his speech, Union Minister of State (Home Affairs) Mullapally Ramachandran expressed his desire to train Indian security personnel on martial arts of Manipur and Malabar.
He also assured that he would make all possible efforts towards this end.
In his presidential address, IGNOU VC, VN Rajasekharan Pillai said that IGNOU's new initiative is aimed at reviving martial art forms, particularly Thang-Ta of Manipur and Kalarippayattu of Kerala.
The workshop was attended by 31 delegates from Manipur led by Prof Shyamkishore, noted drum (pung) artiste of JNM Dance Academy M Satyaban and Th Hemchandra.
The workshop also featured lectures and demonstrations on Thang-Ta, Pung and Manipuri dance.
Technical session of the workshop was inaugurated by MP Dr T Meinya.
The workshop recommended incorporation of Thang-Ta and Kalarippayattu in the curriculum of IGNOU so that the two martial art forms live on for eternity.
IGNOU officials attending the workshop remarked that the workshop was a success.
As a part of the workshop organised in commemoration of IGNOU's silver jubilee, a logo was released at Hotel Alakapuri on November 4 .
An exhibition of materials related to Thang-Ta and cultures of Manipur and Malabar was also organised at SK Pottekad Cultural Centre on November 5 .
