Imphal, November 10:
Along with Imphal West District Police confiscating around 200/300 mobile phone SIM cards from Pan Dukans selling and issuing them without any proper verification leading to their misuse by underground activists in serving monetary demand to Government officials and businessmen, letters have been written to three private mobile service providers for de-activating these SIM cards as well as for proper verification regarding antecedents of the subscribers before extending the service.
A top official of the police department disclosed that the step has been taken in view of the rampant misuse of the mobile phone SIM cards, purchased from Pan Dukans serving as franchisees of some of the private mobile service providers, by the underground activists in connection with extortion of money from Government officials and businessmen.
During the course of verification, it has been detected that some of the SIM cards have been issued against the name of people who do not possess mobile phones or even applied for the same.
The Police Department has also written to three private mobile service providers concerned for deactivating the SIM cards seized from the Pan Dukans along with giving necessary instruction for proper verification of the applicants, the official said, adding that if required, the Police can extend co-operation in verifying the antecedents of the applicants.
Imphal West Police launched the drive of confiscating the SIM cards from the Pan Dukans last month.
