Imphal, May 03:
As part of the prescriptions suggested by the Centre for police modernization, significant progress has been made for installing computer sets in six police stations of the State in the first phase to facilitate speedy dissemination of information.
Christened Common Integrated Police Application (CIPA) the police modernization programme conceived by the Centre is being implemented throughout the country with the State Government implementing the same in six police stations, informed a source from the police department.
Disclosing that CIPA was initiated in order to share/relay prompt information between the States and the Centre, the source maintained that as Manipur is among the highly volatile States in the country the programme is considered as an important apparatus in tackling criminal activities.
The source also listed 53 police stations as functional ones out of the total of 58 spread across the nook and corner of the State.
The police stations identified for executing Phase-I of the CIPA plan include Imphal East (Porompat), Imphal PS in Imphal West district, Lamphel, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Singjamei PS.
Even though wiring and other essential computer installation works have been completed, vital components in the CIPA network namely internet connectivity are yet to be provided, said the source and added that an expert team from the Centre will be arriving soon to give a final shape to the plan.
Mentioning that plans are also afoot to cover 17 more police stations in the second phase, the source admitted that he does not know the priority list set up for the modernisation drive.
Significantly inspite of the measures taken up, there are still many PS located in the far flung and interior areas of the State that are yet to be armed with basic communication facility like telephones.
