Imphal, May 27:
Expressing strong suspicion that some PWD officials may have been swindling huge amount of money meant for development of the Old Cachar Road (Tongjei Maril Road), secretary of the Old Cachar Road (Tongjei Maril) Chingmi Tammi Development Committee has demanded a definite report of the work executed by PWD.
Secretary of the Committee L Keilanchandra, while speaking to reporters today, decried that even as the State Government initiated development work of the road since 1972 in paper, no development work was ever executed on ground.
As a result, the continued pathetic condition of the road has been causing severe hardships and inconveniences to the people settling along side the road as well as to commuters and traders who use this route for their business.
For all these long years, the Committee has been urging upon the Govt to develop the road, he said.
Exercising the Right to Information Act, the Committee submitted a written application to the Chief Engineer PWD seeking details of the actual development work undertaken by the PWD and amount of money spent on Old Cachar road.
Despite the repeated instruction of the Information Commissioner to furnish the details sought by the Committee, the Chief Engineer has been refusing to provide the same, Keilanchandra conveyed.
Reiterating its demand for a detailed report, advisor of the Committee Th Jadumani cautioned that strong agitation including bandhs and blockades will be launched against the Chief Engineer PWD in case he fails to furnish the report at the earliest.
The Committee also decried the failure of the DC Bishnupur to furnish a report on the utilization of the Bishnupur A/C Local Area Development Fund.
Jadumani informed that the Committee has made all preparations to agitate against the DC with the help of people.
