Imphal, July 26:
Along with arriving at an agreement to allow vehicle owners to paint the name plates of their vehicles in both English and Meetei Mayek at their own discretion, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the State Government and Meelal in this connection today.
The MoU was signed after a joint meeting at the office chamber of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh this afternoon.
Accordingly, the State Government has released all the Meelal activists arrested by the police during its crackdown without any condition.
It is said that the MoU did not mention anything on the earlier stand of Meelal for compulsory inscription of the name plates of all the vehicles with Meetei Mayek.
Besides Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, Transport Minister L Jayentakumar, YAS Minister N Biren, Transport Commissioner H Imocha and DGP Y Joykumar were present during the meeting from the side of the Government.
The 11 Meelal delegation was led by its president Ngasepam Yumjao.
Later addressing a press conference at the head office of Meelal in connection with signing of the MoU, Yumjao said an agreement has been signed with the Government after relaxing the earlier stand of Meelal and all the arrested Meelal activists have been released unconditionally.
However, Meelal would continue to intensify its agitation for promotion of original scripts if the police personnel harass the public and force them to erase the name plates written in Meetei Mayek.
Yumjao appealed to the vehicle owners to write the name plates with Meetei Mayek on top and below with English.
Meanwhile, a reception function was organised at the head office of Meelal in honour of all its 16 activists who have been released from police custody.
Speaking at the occasion, vice president of Meelal Sh Tomba Mangang and general secretary M Naokhomba alleged that they were subjected to harassment and torture by the police in the custody.
