As a first step towards issuance of Unique Identification Number to all citizens of the State as done in other States of India, Chief Secretary DS Poonia held a meeting on the programme with officials of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) today.
Among others, the meeting was attended by Assistant Director General of UIDAI, Guwahati Regional office, T Mag.
The meeting focused on issuing Unique Identification Numbers to citizens of Manipur.
The same programme would be implemented by the State Planning Department as nodal agency.
An official source informed that the State Government has taken up necessary initiatives for implementation of the UIDN programme.
Unique Identification Numbers would have 12 digits and these numbers would be issued after taking photographs of iris, face and finger prints of each citizen.
Due process of issuing UIDNs may begin from February next year.
In the first phase, UIDNs would be given to BPL families and other economically backward families.
For this, the Government would provide Rs 100 to each member of these families.
The requisite amount for providing each member of the BPL and backward families has been already sanctioned by the 13th Finance Commission.
Today's meeting was also attended by Finance Department, Rural Development, Revenue, Science and Technology, Home, IT, CAF &PD and NIS, added the source.
