Commemorating the 174th Raising Day of the Assam Rifles all ranks of the para military force under the IG AR (S) along with ex-servicemen laid wreaths at the Assam Rifles war memorial located within Kangla today.
The IG of Assam Rifles (S) Major Gen AK Choudhury led the men in laying the wreaths at 10 am today, said a statement issued by the PRO of Assam Rifles.
Concurrently a 'Run for Peace' programme was organised by the 26 Sector of AR which was participated by 980 students from different schools of Chandel district.
The run was flagged off by the Commander of 26 Sector from St Paul's High School, Komlathabi and wound up at Pallel.
Spectators lined up the route through which the runners passed through, said the PRO and added in his address to the gathering the Commander of 26 Sector said that for the last 174 years, the Assam Rifles has endeavoured to touch the lives of the common people of the North East in all spheres.
The Commander also exhorted the children, who were from different communities to unitedly work for a better and peaceful Manipur, added the PRO.
On the occasion, Father George of St Paul's School thanked 26 Sector for organising the event.
He stated that such events are an opportunity for the students to forge friendly ties with the Assam Rifles and imbibe the ethos of discipline and camaderie.
The run for peace event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony.
Similarly a Run for Peace was also organised by 12 Assam Rifles of the 10 Sector for the people of Kamjong and Chassad in Ukhrul district.
The unit conducted marathon race for men and women (above 14 years).
11 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector also organised a run for peace at Tamenglong district yesterday, said the statement and added that a football match was also conducted.
DC of Tamenglong Ms Jacintha Lazarus flagged off the run for peace event.
Over and above this, 17 Assam Rifles organised a health mela in Ukhrul town where the local people were examined by a team of medical officer and OC of the Dental Unit.
