Imphal, October 18 2010:
At least three shops, which were selling petrol in the black, have been gutted in a devastating fire that broke out at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai here at around 6.30 am today.
Information culled from the site of the incidents said that the fire broke out from the house cum shop of one Irungbam Ongbi Mema Devi while she was drying Chillies on an Electric heater.
As the petrol-filled Jerrycans being kept nearby caught fire, the intensity of the inferno increased and spread to the neighbouring shops belonging to Irungbam Ongbi Borkeinya and Irungbam Ningol Taruni Devi respectively.

Some rented rooms on the first floor of these shops also suffered damage in the fire.
Timely arrival of the Fire Brigade personnel managed to put out the fire before it could spread to other houses in the congested areas, thus minimising the loss.
Four fire tenders were pressed into service and it took around one hour to bring the fire under control.
After the incident, personnel of Imphal Police Station raided the shops in the area and seized many jerrycans filled with petrol and diesel as well as 31 LPG cylinders (both filled and empty).
It may be noted here that the Commissioner of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution had already notified to all the Deputy Commissioners and SPs of the District for taking up necessary steps to prevent sale of any petroleum product in black.
