Imphal, February 07, 2011:
The number of MBBS seats in Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) would be raised from the present strength of 100 to 150. This was announced by Special Director General of the Ministry of Health Services Dr DC Jain at RIMS Jubilee Hall yesterday while interacting with faculties of RIMS at the end of his two day visit to the institute.
Apart from the seats reserved for students from the seven Northeastern States, 15 seats are reserved for students coming from other parts of the country.
RIMS Director Dr S Sekharjit and other senior faculties took the Special Director General around the institute to show the departments and the hospital.
Dr Sekharjit apprised Dr Jain that apart from the old buildings, most of the equipment whose numbers are also inadequate, have become outdated.
Noting that some hostels of the post graduate students are in dilapidated condition, Dr Jain stated that new ones would be constructed.
Further noting that most of the buildings of RIMS are 40 years old, the Special Director General assured that new ones would be constructed so that each department has its separate buildings.
He said that new equipment would be purchased for all departments.
The absence of boundary walls has to be attended to and the same must be constructed soon in view of the law and order situation of Manipur, Dr Jain stated.
He said that the Health Ministry would give top priority to development of infrastructure since RMC (now RIMS) was constructed to provide medical education to just 50 students.
Dr Jain who heads a special sub committee visited RIMS to assess the ground realities personally after all the issues confronting RIMS were discussed in an executive council meeting held at Delhi on January 31, said a press release issued by the RIMS media advisor.
