Imphal, August 06 2009:
Along with launching a poster campaign in connection with the July 23 fake encounter at BT Road, the JAC Against the Brutal Killing of Chungkham Sanjit has reiterated its demand to dismiss all the police commandos involved in the killing.
Talking to mediapersons at the occasion of launching the poster campaign, JAC convener L Anita asserted that suspension of six police commandos is only a ploy to pacify the outraged public.
SI Punshiba and his team should be terminated from service and imprisoned for life, Anita said, adding that action should also be taken up against the higher officials who failed to control the team.
Reacting to the remarks of the Chief Minister that Sanjit was an underground cadre at the time of his death, Anita asked the Chief Minister to provide the evidences to prove this.
Pointing to the example of Union Home Minister who resigned over the Mumbai terror attack and the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir over a sex scandal, the JAC convener wondered why Ibobi is clinging on to his Chief Ministership despite the growing demand for his resignation on moral ground over the July 23 incident.
Demanding removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, which gives sweeping power to the security forces, from the whole of Manipur, Anita also demanded to make public the report of who fired the bullets that killed the two persons and wounded five others in the incident.
The JAC has also demanded release of the leaders of Apunba Lup who have been taken arrested.
Meanwhile, Women Empowerment for Justice, while maintaining that the announcement of the Government to suspend six police commandos including an SI is only a move to suppress the ongoing movement of the people, has also pressed for dismissal of the involved police commandos without waiting for the report of the judicial inquiry.
Addressing a press conference at Bamon Kampu, a spokesperson of Women Empowerment for Justice observed that the revelation of Tehelka expose is enough for dismissal of the involved police commandos and punishment of the police officers who tried to mislead the people.
Decrying imposition of indefinite curfew thereby causing hardship to daily wage earners, the spokesperson said it is very unfortunate that the Government has been resorting to imposition of curfew to suppress the voice of the people.
Decrying the failure of lone woman MLA Okram Ongbi Landhoni to say anything in connection with the July 23 incident that left a pregnant woman killed, the women's body has also demanded resignation of Landhoni as well as other MLAs in the ruling who have been maintaining silence over the issue.
