DGP lines up State SFs for hills

DGP Sahid Ahmad has said that additional State security forces would be stationed in all the hill districts of Manipur.
Addressing a press conference conducted at his office chamber this evening, Sahid Ahmad said that the new move is aimed at enhan-cing general policing under a directive from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
In the aftermath of Ukhrul ADC Member Ngalangzar Malue's assassination, the State Government was compelled to deploy additional State security forces in Ukhrul, the DGP said while adding that the security forces would be stationed in the town until normalcy is restored.
Responding to a query on the involvement of NSCN (IM) in the assasination of Ngalangzar Malue, Sahid Ahmad said that the matter is being investigated and the State police need to gather evidence.
Although the DGP did not clearly mention about NSCN (IM)'s involvement in the case, he categorically stated that there are over 400 criminal cases against the outfit.
Informing the media that additional State security forces would be posted in Senapati, Tamenglong and Chura-chandpur districts apart from Ukrhul, Sahid Ahmad said that State security forces would be sent to strategic areas in view of UNC spon- sored 10-day ban on National projects.
As an emergency measure, a large number of security personnel have been sent to guard Railway projects, he added.
Responding to another question on police brutality meted out to student agitators, Sahid Ahmad said that an enquiry is in progress and no security personnel would be sparred if he/she is found guilty.
Mentioning the importance of maintaining healthy relationship between police and people, Sahid Ahmad said that different steps would be taken up from the next fortnight on community policing.
