The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Ukhrul, N Rajnikanta Singh has issued non-bailable warrant of arrest against six individuals in connection with the alleged fraudulent withdrawal of over Rs 80 lakhs for road maintenance in Ukhrul district.
The scam first came to light when The Sangai Express published a story on how over Rs 80 lakhs have been withdrawn for 16 works, for which not a single work was ever executed.
The CJM had earlier registered a case and asked the Ukhrul police to investigate the case based on the report published in the papers.
Two MLAs of Ukhrul district, A Aza and W Keishing also spoke to the press about the alleged withdrawal of the said amount and named the contractors and pointed the finger of accusation against the Minister concerned.
After going through the report submitted by the Investigating Officer and other material available, the CJM ruled that "a prima facie case has been made out and there are sufficient grounds for proceeding against the accused persons".
The non bailable warrant of arrest were issued against the six accused, namely, K Wungshim, EE of PWD Ukhrul division, MC Daniel AE of PWD, Ukhrul division, Lightson, Section Officer of the PWD, Ukhrul division, Simeon Jajo, Cashier cum Accountant, PWD, Ukhrul division, Suresh Jain proprietor of M/S SK Construction, Thangal bazar and Sapam Keba of Tera.
The Court made the warrant returnable by October 25.The Officer-in-Charge of Ukhrul police has been directed to execute the warrant of arrest and submit a report by the mentioned date without fail.
