Imphal, April 22 2009:
With the absence of police station in Tousem area, Tousem Pui Baudi (Tousem Women's Organisation) has been shouldering the responsibility of checking anti-social activities in the area.
Opening of a police station in Tousem has been a long standing demand of the people of the area since the past many years.
The nearest police station of the sub-division is Tamenglong police station at the district headquarters which is a good one day journey on foot.
The sub-division currently does not have any public transport service to reach the district headquarters.
Tousem sub-division, which borders Assam and Nagaland, still remains the most backward sub-division of Tamenglong district even behind sleepy Tamei and Nungba sub-divisions.
The villagers have to spare three days time for a to and fro journey to Imphal as they have to halt at the district headquarters twice before they reach their village.
With the absence of Central security forces and State police, the sub-division has become a safe haven for UG cadres and anti-social elements.
There have also been instances of stand-offs between different UG outfits, informed former village chairman Ranjeiken.
The villagers are helpless and unable to complain to the police even if anti-social elements harass the villagers by barging into their homes, lamented Ranjeiken.
Tousem Pui Baudi secretary Agnis said that it is hard to resolve all the scuffles and check the anti-social activities in the area by the organisation.
Women face lots of inconveniences when the situation goes out of control, said the secretary and added that even UG cadres sometimes misbehave with the women of the area.
Agnis further said that in view of all these inconveniences, it is has been the long standing demand of the people of the area to open a police station in the area, but the State Government has not listened to the grievances of the people.
Apart from these worries, there is no doctor at Tousem Primary Health Centre, no means of communication, no adequate teachers at Tousem Govt High School, no water supply, and no FCS godown, complained Agnis.
