Imphal, April 20 2010:
Congress is born to serve the people, and the increasing popularity and strengthening of the party means development of the country, which also strengthens communal harmony among the people, said president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Gaikhangam at a function held at Gamnom Saparmeina in Sadar hills today.
The MPCC president also called for support to the Congress candidates in the upcoming election to the Autonomous District Council (ADC).
He said that only the Congress could execute welfare programmes for the people.
The party is organising a year long celebration of the 125th year of existence of Congress since its inception in 1885, and today's function being held at the CC Hall at Gamnom Saparmaina was also a part of the celebration, Gaikhangam said.
Attending the function as the chief guest, MLA Gaikhangam said that Congress is not a party that fights election to grab power and does nothing for the welfare of the people.
The year long celebration function is being held on the basis of three points, post foundation of the party, present situation of the party and future vision of the party, he said.
Now the party, founded on the ideology of "non-violence" of Mahatma Gandhi, has its popularity throughout the world, with the observance of the birth anniversary of Gandhiji as the International Non-violence Day by the United Nations, Gaikhangam said.
Since the launch of the NREGS programme across the country, people below the poverty line have got relief from the clutch of poverty and are able to lead a life with smiling face.
The scheme has increased the popularity of the party among the people which indicats that the party has no bar of religion in taking up welfare works for the weaker section of the society, he added.
Minister of IPR, PHED, TN Haokip presided over by MPCC member C Doungel.
Delivering key note address of the function, MPCC general secretary (administration) Bidyapati Senjam said even though many political parties are there, Congress is the only party serving the people with true spirit.
Other political parties come out only at the election timing.
Congress is not for only contesting election but for work and today's Congressmen are stepping to the same path that was follow by the yesteryear leaders under a principal.
Every body irrespective of the caste, creed, colour and sex, they belong can be member and worker of the party.
The party is not like BJP which is based on Hinduism, he added.
