Ethnic design centre opened

A unit of 'Resource hub Centre for Ethnic Designs of North East' has been opened today at the North East Institute of Science & Technology (NEIST) sub-station, Lamphelpat with Director CSIR: NEIST, Jorhat Dr PG Rao inaugurating the Centre in the presence of State and Central Government department officials.
The first of its kind in the State, the Centre is equipped with technologically compatible machines for manufacture of leather shoes and bags with indigenous designs/patterns of the North Eastern region.
Speaking at the occasion, Scientist in-charge of the sub-station Dr H Birkumar said with the opening of the Centre consumers can purchase locally-made bags and shoes at affordable prices.
He also informed that nine personnel of the station visited various NE State to study designs associated with the region's culture and tradition after which the indigenous designs woven to leather bags were sent to Jorhat as samples.
Dr Birkumar also exuded confidence that the Centre will be able to cope with demands of the local consumers.
In his address as the chief guest, Dr PG Rao stated that with the installation of the machine, not only would quantum of locally produce bags and shoes be increased but is certain to make them available at cheaper rates.
Further expressing that through opening of the Centre unemployed youths would be able to undertake self-employment ventures, he also assured all possible assistance towards expansion and development of the Centre.
