The proposed 24 general strike called by an organisation of retired police and fire service department personnel has been declared null and void by leaders of the body today.
It may be recalled that the general strike is being imposed by Joint action Committee of Organisation of Retired Armed Police, fire Service and Police Personnel, Manipur, and United Retired Organisation, manipur from August 23 midnight demanding the fulfilment of its eight-point proposals including revision of pension and reduction of interest rate of private banks to 2 percent.
In another development, the JAC conveyed in a press release of calling off the proposed general strike in the interest of the general public in general and student community in particular.
Meanwhile, according to one Moirangthem Tomba Singh of Nongmeibung Chakpram Leirak, who personally informed that he was the president of the Organisation (retired service personnel), neither was he nor were other office bearers of the JAC intimated on the proposed agitation programme.
Moreover, Tomba asserted he had distanced from the Organisation by giving up the post of presidentship some three years back.
The former president clarifying that the Organisation is not based in Nongmeibung Chakpram Leirak as claimed in an earlier release of the body, Tomba also appealed to the general public not to be misled by information regarding the general strike call.
the former president was accompanied by one Wahengbam Muhindro Singh, who identified himself as the Organisation's Assistant Secretary.
He too denied having any prior information on the agitation programme.
