Census 2011 Second phase from Feb 9

The second phase of Census of India, 2011 (Population Enumeration) is all set to begin from February 9. In this connection, Deputy Director General of National Population Registrar , SK Chakraborty, who is also in charge of the Census operation in North East States and West Bengal, today released a mascot and made a power point presentation on Census of India, 2011 at Hotel Classic here.
In his presentation, Chakraborty explained the definition of Census, its history and importance and the expenditure involved in such exercise.
The presentation also made note of issues related to data processing, new inclusions in 2011, functions of National Population Registrar (NPR) and others.
He explained that the first phase of Census 2011 that was formally launched by President Pratibha Patil on April 1 last year was just house listing, housing census and collection of datas for NPR and the second phase which is to be conducted from February 9 to 28 is the census exercise of head counts.
In addition to this, process for due collection of biometrics, photos, Iris imaging and taking the finger prints would commence, he informed, adding that such exercises would not only help in working out collective data base of the country but also in strengthening the security.
At the occasion, Chakraborty released Pragana, a mascot of Census of India, 2011.It depicts the picture of a lady enumerator.
Director of Census Operations, Manipur Y Thamkishore Singh, who was also present at the occasion, informed that steps are being taken up to ensure that the instances of abnormal increase in population that was witnessed in three sub-divisions of Senapati district in last Census exercise of 2001 are not repeated.
Efforts would also be made to prevent duplications.
In response to a question from mediapersons, the Director admitted that there is some conflict between Thoubal and Chandel district with regard to Census exercise.
It is said that for the census exercise in Manipur, in all 7000 enumerators and supervisors would be used and total expenditure of Rs 2 crores, exclusive of NPR's, would be utilised for the purpose.
When asked about the ongoing hunger strike of the teachers who are supposed to be deployed as enumerators, the Director asserted that the demand and the agitation of the teachers is against the Government and so far there has been no report that the teachers would stay away from the census exercise.
To spread public awareness on Census of India, 2011, exhibition football matches are being organised in collaboration with All Manipur Football Association, he added.
