Even as the demand to implement Meetei Mayek in Manipur is still raging, the first volume of Cheitharon Kumpapa, the Royal Chronicle of the kings of Manipur has been published in Meetei Mayek along with a translation in English recently at London and New York.
The first edition was prepared by well known Manipuri academic Dr Saroj Nalini Arambam Parratt.
The book is published by Routledge, London and New York for the Royal Asiatic Society and will be available from Routledge's Delhi office.
An e-mail sent to a columnist of The Sangai Express (Manipuri edition) Haobam Sanajaoba said that Volume I of the book contains the Chronicle up to 1763.A special feature of the edition is the facsimile of the Official Palace with text in Meetei Mayek, which bears the authentic seal of Maharaja Bodhachandra.
An English translation of the Chronicle is also added to the first volume of the publication, which aims to convey the style of the original.
Other than this, there are scholarly notes after each section explaining and clarifying the linguistic, textual and historical problems.
Dr Arambam has also provided an extended introduction which deals with the nature of the Chronicle, problems of dating, the various manuscripts and versions and the historical value of the Cheitharon Kumpapa.
The e-mail message however did not mention the price of the book.
