Imphal, January 24: During the year 2003, the State Police and Army/AR/CRPF achieved commendable successes on the law and order/CI front.

During the period, altogether 881 insurgents belonging to various groups were arrested and 104 were killed says a press hand out issued by the state police.

A total of 123 different types of weapons along with 1601 assorted ammunition, 62 Hand Grenades, 15 bombs, 34 WT Sets were recovered.

Out of 881 UGs arrested, 159 could be detained under SA.

Though there had been serious challenges/threats on the law and order front due to continued subversive activities of various UG groups operating in the State, the overall law and order situation remained well under control during the period.

These achievements can be attributed to collection of actionable intelligence, improve role played by police and coordination among various Security Agencies involved in CI Ops/maintenance of law and order.

During the year, the State Government accorded sanction to the increase of CDOs from 500 to 800 for more effective performance on the CI front.

In their concerted efforts to check the smuggling and trafficking of contraband items, the NAB Police and District Police units were able to seize 19.237 Kg and 520 mg of No 4 Heroin powder, 2041.7 Kg of ganja, 190 Kg of Opium, 1.5 Kg of Charas and 83,310 tablets/capsules (SP, Relipen etc.) and arrest 127 persons in connection with the seizure of above items.

Besides, in a special drive by NAB Police 28,27,000 ganja plants were destroyed during the year.

In investigation of cases, significant improvement was noticed during the year.

Altogether 382 cases were charged sheeted and 2428 returned in FR as compared to 280 and 3141 in 2002 and 307 and 3958 in 2001.During the year under review, 55 persons would be got convicted.

Police efforts were not focused alone on the above mentioned activities in Traffic Management, Police succeeded in ensuring free flow of traffic.

A sum of Rs 2,83,480 was realized under MV Act from defaulters of Traffic Rules and Regulations during the year.
