A personnel of 6 Jat Regiment was reportedly killed in an encounter which took place between the security forces and suspected underground activists at Saiton, about 10 kms south of Moirang Police Station in Bishnupur district at around 10.30 pm yesterday.
The slain personnel has been identified as Satishkumar of Bullansahar, Setpur in Uttar Pradesh.
A PIB Defence Wing statement, however, said that the brief encounter which took place last night was between the security forces and the armed cadres of underground group PREPAK.
The incident took place when the troops approached the village on receiving information regarding presence of UGs.
The UGs who were hiding inside the village opened indiscriminate fire and in the encounter that ensued Havildar Satish Kumar of 6 Jat Regiment received bullet injuries and later succumbed to his injuries, the statement said, adding that the UGs managed to escape under cover of darkness through the village.
Meanwhile, Moirang polide station has registered a case in connection with the incident and the post-mortem was conducted at RIMS morgue here today.
One fatal bullet that hit below his right arm pit exited on the opposite side.
