Prison terms for 2 Myanmarese

A special court of the NDPS has sentenced two Myanmarese Nationals, who were arrested with 580 grams of raw opium, to 2 years and 10 months rigorous imprisonment (RI) in addition to imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 .
The two accused Myanmarese Nationals identified as Tingsoumiy (40) s/o late Lamao and Wouchaing (35) s/o Thungkhang, both residents of Taiyong village under Tamu district of Myanmar were arrested by troops of 31 Assam Rifles on September 13, 2008 along with 580 grams of raw opium while trying to enter Manipur, which is punishable under Section 18 (C) and 29 ND & PS Act, 1985 .
The accused were subsequently handed over to the custody of Customs Preventive Force, which registered a case to initiate a trial in the special court of NDPS.
In the final hearing of the case today, Judge of the Special Court of NDPS Ph Surendra Singh sentenced the two Myanmarese to rigorous imprisonment for 2 years and 10 months and a fine of Rs 10,000 .
In case of default to pay the fine, the accused persons have to undergo imprisonment for another one month.
The period of detention undergone by the two accused Myanmarese during the period of investigation and trial from September 14, 2008 to May 22, 2011, however, shall have to be set off against the term of imprisonment imposed on them.
