Imphal, April 14 2012:
Manipur Public Works Department (PWD) has reportedly proposed again to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for inclusion of the Imphal by-pass route in the work programme of the current financial year.
In case the Imphal by-pass development work materialises, heavy vehicles plying along the Imphal-Dimapur section of National Highway-39 would be diverted from the Imphal city roads.
According to an official source, the Ministry had actually included the nearly 27 kilometre long Imphal by-pass road development in the work programme of the previous financial year.
As development of the by-pass entails extensive road alignment and soil testing among others the State PWD consequently floated a tender inviting consultant from outside Manipur after the said road development work was included by the Ministry in the last financial year.
With the State's law and order problem being the apparent reason, no consultant came forth in the bidding process consequently forcing deferment of the work.
Inspite of the initial setback the PWD is determined to develop the by-pass and as such has sent a fresh proposal to the Union Ministry whose consent is being awaited to process re-floating of tender on inviting consultant to carry out survey works.
The by-pass envisages diverting the heavy vehicles on the NH-39 section from Khonghampat to Khamran and returning to the Highway on the Imphal-Moreh section after passing through Langjing and Langthabal.
It is believed that in view of the ambitious Trans Asian Highways likely to pass through Manipur, the Imphal By-pass is being considered as a major project and important route.
