Imphal, November 13 2008:
Taking into account the plight of the common people due to the rising prices and scarcity of essential commodities following the economic blockade being imposed by SDSA on NH-39, MPP has urged the Government to bring a solution to the impasse through dialogue.
Talking to media persons today, MPP president Dr L Chandramani said that the party is deeply concerned with the difficulties being endured by the people following unavailability of petrol, diesel and LPG.
Observing that the 13 day long and continuing economic blockade has put all the people in great difficulties, Chandramani appealed to the Government to strike an agreement with the Senapati student body at the earliest.
In case the Government fails to bring a solution to the current impasse, MPP would chalk out its own action plan in the interest of the people.
If the presence of MPP is necessary in the negotiation between the Government and the SDSA, MPP has its door wide open, he said.
Taking part in the press meet, former Union Minister Th Chaoba noted that inspite of suffering a lot, people support the blockade as the cause of the Senapati District Students' Association is justified.
He demanded to know from the Government the exact amount of money spent on improvising the NH-39 and the remaining amount yet to be invested for development of the highway.
Observing that District Councils of hill districts have been empowered to a relatively considerable level with hefty salaries while urban local bodies of valley districts are being denied any power other than the meagre amounts as honorarium, Chaoba asserted that such disparity in the structure and treatment have resulted in a vast chasm between the hills and valley regarding local administration.
He also demanded that facilities enjoyed by District Councils be extended to Urban Local Bodies.
Disclosing that MPP wish to field its candidate in the by-election of Moirang Assembly constituency, Dr Chandramani recalled that the MPP candidate of Moirang A/C lost by a very close margin during the last Assembly elections.
As MPP is now a partner of the NDA, MPP would like to field a potential winner who can defeat any Congress candidate in consultation with other NDA partners based in Manipur, he confided.
Meanwhile, Councillor of Sagolband A/C Ward No 7 Chabungbam Joykumar who got elected under RJD ticket has joined MPP, informed the MPP president adding that Joykumar is now an active member of the party.
He further pledged that necessary efforts will be put in so that Joykumar get elected as MPP candidate from Sagolband A/C in the next Assembly election likely to be held in 2012.Joykumar said that he joined MPP considering the changing political scenario and his lack of enthusiasm to work in a political party based at Delhi.
