Aizawl, April 14 2012:
A leader of the ruling Congress was arrested in Mizoram for making derogatory statements against opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) leaders, police said Saturday.
He was later released on bail.
"Lalrozara, general secretary and party's chief spokesman, was arrested at Aizawl Friday night after MNF leaders filed an FIR (first information report)," Aizawl district police chief Lalbiakthanga Khiangte told reporters.
"We released the Congress leader on bail as the offence was bailable," he said.
MNF leaders, including former minister Liansuama and MNF's youth wing president P.C.Lalthansanga, filed an FIR at the Aizawl police station alleging that a press release issued by the Congress leader was a "lie and defamatory" .
The Congress press statement released Thursday alleged that some MNF leaders were keeping close relations and having dinner with MNF legislator R.Lalthangliana to formulate strategies on how to "cover up" the mistakes done by the opposition legislators on the controversy surrounding the reported lapsing of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan funds.
The MNF leaders denied the allegations of the Congress, which is now in power since 2008 .
