Imphal, October 24 2010:
Contrary to the very principle of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), excavator is being used for dredging drainage system under a Gram Panchayat of Imphal East district.
Regarded as a flagship programme of the UPA Government, the scheme was launched to provide job to every household for atleast 100 days in a year.
However, at Top Naoriya Gram Panchayat, which is not far from the DC office of Imphal East, an excavator was today found used in connection with MGNREGS works.
The work allocated under the scheme for dredging of the drainage system around the playground of Star Sporting Club, Porompat under the Gram Panchayat was supposed to be carried out by the job card holders.
But an excavator was used instead of job card holders engaged in the work.
It may be noted that under the provisions of the
Scheme, no contract or machinery could be used for any of the allocated work.
Interacting with The Sangai Express, one of the persons who was present near the work site, simply said, ''It is their excavator, please ask the Pradhan''.
