Imphal, August 22 2010:
Amid prohibition by the Government of Nagaland on passage of Manipur bound goods carriers weighing more than 9 tonnes, over 270 loaded trucks and light vehicles have been escorted back to Imphal today under stringent security cover provided by CRPF personnel.
According to an informed source, authorities of the neighbouring State have cited frequent landslides and weak bridges in the Nagaland section of NH-39 compelling them restric the goods to 9 tonnes with immediate effect.
As an alternative measure for loaded trucks, particularly petrol/diesel tankers, to return to the State, information has been conveyed to vehicles currently stranded in between Dimapur and Khatkhati to take the Imphal-Jiri route.

With most fuel tankers and trucks transporting essential items to the State weighing above the 9 tonne limit, the Nagaland Govt is apprehensive of the impact the passage of heavily loaded vehicles would have on the road and bridges, particularly on the bypass route, said the source.
Informing that as most of the bridges along the bypass route are weak and Govt of Nagaland is likely to enforce the restriction till the landslide damaged portion has been repaired, the source said NH-53 remains the only alternative route for the stranded tankers to reach Imphal.
It is also speculated that about 100 tankers which were stranded in between Dimapur and Khatkati might have left for Jiribam from where CRPF personnel provided security cover till Imphal.
On the otherhand, a Mao police station source conveyed that 278 loaded trucks and light vehicles have crossed Mao Gate escorted by CRPF personnel this afternoon.
Besides 232 goods-laden trucks the convoy included 28 truck-load of rice, 17 light vehicles and one LPG carrier.
Meanwhile, almost the entire 65 trucks that left Imphal for Jiribam on august 20 to lift rice from godowns in the sub-divisional headquarters have reported their arrival this morning.
