Imphal, June 19 2015 :
The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has decided to close down the National Highways, National projects and inter-district roads for 72 hours in all Zeliangrong inhabited areas of the State with effect from June 24 midnight in support of the demand for Zeliangrong State within the union of India.
The decision was taken as the Government of India has not initiated any positive action to fulfil this genuine demand of Zeliangrong people regarding Statehood so far, ZUF said in a statement.
ZUF had submitted memorandum to the Prime Minister and other Union Ministers on two different occasions regarding the matter, added the statement.
Rani Gaidinliu-led Zeliangrong People's Convention (ZPC) had raised the demand for Zeliangrong homeland/State but she passed away without realising her dream, the statement said.
As such, ZUF has pledged to carry on the struggle of Rani Gaidinliu, the statement added.
Medical services, water supply, power supply and other customary/religious functions are exempted from the
purview of the bandh/closure.
ZUF also appealed to civil society organisations, Churches, 'peis' and people to extend full co-operation to the Zeliangrong people's movement for Statehood.
Those who defy the bandh/closure must be responsible for any eventuality that may arise during the course of the bandh, the statement said.
