Imphal, June 02 2009:
Expressing strong reservation against the State Cabinet decision to evict the offices of student bodies being housed in Government buildings including schools and colleges, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has stated that the Cabinet decision is not acceptable.
Addressing a press conference at the head office of AMSU located inside the campus of DM College here this afternoon, AMSU president Irengbam Jamesbond Mangang asserted that the office of AMSU located inside DM College campus had been set up by the then leaders of the student body with the permission of the Principals and student unions of DM College.
Being a joint body of various other student bodies, location of AMSU office inside DM College and being close to the students is essential, he said, adding that student bodies like AMSU has been closely associated with the history of the State.
Starting from hunger marchers movement in 1965 that led to taking up the issue of foreigners in the State to the movement for Statehood, from the demand for setting up a university in the State and establishment of Regional Institution of Medical Science to the inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution, student leaders of AMSU have played their role, Jamesbond said.
So the Government should have no objection to the location of AMSU office which is also the oldest student body in the State at its present site, he added.
In case the Government tries to use its force for evicting AMSU office from its present location, then AMSU may be compelled to launch various intense agitation against the Government, the student leader warned.
He also demanded the Government to stop hunting student leaders in connection with the killing of Prof Islamuddin of Manipur University.
