Imphal, January 31 2009:
Construction work of the City Convention Centre which has been delayed for a long time due to land acquisition problems will be starting soon, informed an official source.
The foundation stone for the City Convention Centre was laid by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at Kangla on December 2, 2006 .
Necessary paper works to call tender for construction of the convention centre have been completed and tender notice will be issued soon, conveyed the source.

Ahead of issuing tender notice, discussions have been made about to whom the work should be awarded.
Earlier, the construction work was allotted to NBCC but following NBCC submission that it would not be able to execute the work, State PWD is handling the work.
As the State Government has intention to entrust the construction work to a company based outside the State, it is most likely that the work my be entrusted to CIPLEX.
CIPLEX is also handling construction of Capital Project, Ima Keithel and Thoubal market.
Considering lack of progress in these three construction works, the Government has also certain reservations to hand over the construction work of City Convention Centre to the firm.
Earlier when the Government asked the firm expedite the construction works it was handling, CIPLEX officials told the Government that the lack of progress was due to too frequent disturbances because of the prevailing law and order situation.
It is reported that the structure of the convention centre planned earlier will be modified by adding some more components.
To make the City Convention Centre a state of the art building, a team of engineers led by Additional Chief Engineer of Works Department was sent to other States to look at city convention centres there.
The team visited Hyderabad city convention centre, Delhi Vigyan Bhavan, and Habitat Centre.
However, the City Convention Centre can not be developed in the same fashion as Delhi Vigyan Bhavan or Hyderebad City Centre as the land acquired for the centre is not enough.
Nevertheless, it was with an objective to make the building upto date and technlogically alluring that some modifications would be made to the planned structure, informed the source.
Although the Government has acquired an area of 18,000 sq metres for the Centre, the area shrink as expansion of road will affect the site earmarked.
Even if landscape of the centre is affected, there would be no alteration in the building structure due to road expansion.
Construction of the City Convention Centre is targeted for completion within two years, conveyed the official source.
