Government teachers under the banner of the Council of Teachers' Association (COTA) are on cease work strike effective from November 15 demanding adoption of 6th pay in toto for the primary, graduate, higher secondary teachers under the state education directorate.
Government had already agreed to the adoption of the pay bands with effect from April 2006 and other employees of the state government had already enjoyed the revised pay but the necessary orders regarding the adoption of the same for the teachers are still pending.
An official source in the education department said that the issuance of the order has been pending due to non-completion of the list of the teachers for inclusion in the Manipur Government Employees List, a scheme related with the compilation of the employees of each and every department of the government.
The strike has given a great impact to the academic atmosphere as students were kept out of class for the last four days since the commencement of the strike.
Students of Tamphasana Higher Secondary Education and GP Women College at Imphal Jail road today gathered in the front of GP Women College and attempted to march a demonstration rally towards the directorate of education which is not so far away from their institution.
But, a team of police who rushed to the spot blocked them at the start and forced them to confine to their respective institute complex at 11 am today.
