Farmers should not feel ashamed of being a farmer.
They should maintain their dignity.
Farmers should be proud of their profession, said Dr N Iboton, Dean of Central Agricultural University (CAU), Iroishemba.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a one-day awareness programme on farming which was jointly organised by the CAU, Iroishemba and Manipur Loumi Lup at Taothang Khunou.
Observing that 70% of the population of the land is constituted by farmers, Dr N Iboton said, farmers have a great role in facilitating a change in the society.
Farmers should take pride in their profession and work sincerely for the improvement of the economy.
He said, with the increase in the human population, farmers cannot work indiscriminately.
There is a need to employ new techniques in farming in order to increase the products.
For that to materialise, awareness should be given to the farmers.
He said that the CAU is giving training and awareness to farmers on new techniques and farming methods.
Speaking as the guest of honour, publicity secretary of Manipur Loumi Lup, Thoiba Kabui noted that a farmer needs to know the method and the process if he is going to cultivate a particular crop.
He needs to know how to prevent the crop from infection and invasion by pests.
Therefore, awareness programme for the farmers is necessary.
The programme was attended by vice-president of Manipur Loumi Lup, Modhujoy and a local veteran, Bhegyani as the guest of honour and president respectively.
The organisers have also distributed 50 kgs of bean, 100 kgs of mustard seeds, and 25,000 seedlings of U-morok (chili) to villagers of Taothang Khunou.
Professor of Agronomy of the College of Agriculture, CAU, Maibam Sumerjit spoke on organic farming.
