Imphal, March 09 2009:
Cross border trade and business activities at the Indo-Myanmar border in Moreh of Manipur severely paralyzed Monday following imposition of a 12-hour highway bandh along the Indo-Myanmar section of the NH-39.The bandh effective from this morning 6 am was called by the Hill Tribal Council, Moreh in protest against withdrawal of power of Block Development Officer from the ADC, Moreh by an order of the DC Chandel district issued recently.
All shops and other business establishments not only in Moreh town bazaar but also at Namphalong bazaar on the Myanmar site remained closed for the day as vehicles of any kinds originating from Imphal arrived in the town, according to police at Moreh.
No untoward incident occurred during the bandh hour but many vehicles remained stranded on the highway before reaching Moreh, police added.
Meanwhile, the bandh is likely extended as general secretary, Ginsei Lhungdin of the striking council has threatened that if the district authority fails to meet the demand, despite the 12-hour bandh, apart from imposing indefinite bandhs on the highway they will also close down all the government offices located within the Moreh ADC.
