The 1st Debjani Leima Memorial Award and the 27th Death Anniversary of Debjani Leima cum Prized Distribution function was held at Manipur Press Club with MP Dr T Meinya leading the people in paying floral tributes to the photo of late Debjani Leima.
Speaking on the occasion, MP Dr T Meinya observed that all the people need to be empowered in order to solve the problems faced by a society.
Here, the role of education is important as it is through the light of education that people could be empowered.
He further said that we need to go debate on whatever topic that suits the society.
However, the frequency of organising debating competitions in Manipuri society has dwindled of late and number of participants in such competition declined considerably.

In fact, debate during Assembly session too has stopped altogether now-a-days.
A Mobi, Editor of Sanaleibak and President of All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU), who attended the function as one of the Guests of Honour, said that we should appreciate the organizing committee for organizing a debating competition on the occasion of Death Anniversary observance of late Debjani Leima.
He observed that an education system which can instill the minds of the people with a sense of love for their mothers and Motherland is required in Manipur today.
The existing education system is no different from the system which was brought by the British and it does not impart the students with lesson on the history of the land and its people.
Without understanding the history of one's Motherland, it would be impossible to imbibe the idea of nationalism among the people, he added.
The function was presided by Laishram Jogbala, retired Head Mistress.
N Tomba, Advisor, All Manipur Recognise Private School Welfare Association; Chinglen Maisnam, Associate Prof, Department of Economics, MU were also present on the occasion as Guests of Honour and invitees respectively.
In continuation of the function, prizes were presented to the toppers of the State Level Debating Competition organised at Manipur Press Club on the topic 'Privatisation of Education has brought down the quality of education in India' by the Debjani Leima Foundation and Manipur Debating Society on April 12 .
Kangabam Gunarani, a student of Manipuri Department, MU; Heisnam Oken Meetei of North Imphal Cultural organization and Khundrakpam Ranjit, a teacher in KM Blooming School respectively bagged the first, the second and third position in the debating competition.
First prize carries a cash prize.
of Rs 7000, a citation and a free treat with one companion for a year at any of the centres of the Nahakpam Food and Beverages; the second prize carries a cash prize of Rs 5000, a citation and a free treat with one companion for eight months at any of the centres of the Nahakpam Food and Beverages while the third prize carries a cash prize of Rs 3000, a citation and a free treat with one companion for six months at any of the centres of the Nahakpam Food and Beverages.
